2010 Flyboards info presented by Gunnar Biniasch

flyboards 2010The BOOT show in Dusseldorf, Germany, is the largest watersports exhibition in Europe and Flysurfer were there showing all their latest kit. The kites have been out for a while now but the big news is of course the 2010 Flyboards line up. We got to see, test and discuss the samples at the dealer meeting in Lake Como in August but now the production boards are ready. The line up has changed a little from last year. The sizes have been tweaked and the FlyWave is a totally new addition. This is a mutant style board designed for slashing waves whilst remaining user friendly and easy to ride. The bindings were amazing last year and have been kept very similar again. The major change is the adjustment method. The laces have been swapped for a pull pull system. This makes it possible to adjust them using only one hand leaving the other one free to control the kite. These will no doubt go down a storm again this year!

Flysurfer and Flyboards team rider Gunnar Biniasch took a moment to walk us through the line up.

Flysurfer and Flyboards Team Movie: EXEAT

Flysurfer Speed 3This video has been in the making for ages. A teaser trailer was released three months ago and since then we have all been waiting with baited breath. The movie sees Flysurfer team riders Yusca, Lennart, Sebastian and Haiko traveling to Egypt where they show off the Flyboard range, the Speed 3 and the Psycho 4. There is loads of action and some interviews too. The filming and editing is stunning!

Flysurfer Speed 3 Videos

Flysurfer Speed 3 DeluxeWhen we went away for the Flysurfer Innovation Days event at Lake Como in August we spend a lot of time in importer meetings discussing what was important for us. One big thing was more video and promotion. The world likes open and social companies, as opposed to faceless corporations. Flysurfer have responded by putting together a couple of videos from that very event. The first shows a few action shots and then we get to hear from the design team as well as a number of importers and retailers. The second video shows more action and looks at some of the technical features of kite.

Flysurfer Speed 3

The Speed is a legendary kite. After testing the new Flysurfer Speed 3 in Italy at the Flysurfer Innovation Days at Lake Como, we know the Speed 3 is an impressive piece of engineering. It flies faster than ever before, turns faster, depowers more and does not backstall. The new developments have made the kite so much more useable. Loops are now totally possible. The kite now comes as standard with the Infinity bar which is a great improvement. The bridle is noticably shorter and very similar to the Psycho 4 bridle.

Together with a Flydoor on the water the Speed 3 is unbeatable. With an XL Flydoor and a 19m Speed 3 Deluxe Edition, you will be going easily in 7 knots. On land the 15m Speed 3 Deluxe is the one to have. Massive floaty airs and plenty of low end power will make sure you are the first one out riding and jumping when most are still struggling to keep their kites in the sky.

Last weekend we did our first UK demo of the Speed 3 at Extreme Kiteshop’s new shop opening festival at their flying site on a turf farm near Worcester. The wind was perfect for the Speed 3. It was one of the first kites up in the morning before the wind really kicked in. As the wind built throughout the day the Speed really came into its own. Hill riding with the Speed was great fun.

This weekend we will be at ATB Shop’s demo weekend at Llangenith, SW Wales. Again the weather is forecast to be perfect Speed conditions. It will allow everyone to test it’s low end on both land and water. I am sure videos and photos will soon emerge.

**Edit**
The Llangenith weekend has been canceled due to poor wind forecasts.

Flysurfer Speed 3 due for release in September

Flysurfer Speed 3 due out September 2009

The Speed 2 has been on the market for around 3 years now. It has dominated the light wind kiting performance and provided more hang-time than any other kite. Never before has a kite been the measure of things in lightwind performance and hang-time for three years in a row. Flysurfer do not release new kites unless they are genuinely better than their predecessors in every way. The Speed 2 is pretty tough to follow.

In order to create the Speed 3 Flysurfer have put in:

  • an 18-month-long development time
  • new construction software
  • endless hours of overtime
  • countless tests all over the world
  • Andreas Hanrieder to complete the development team

The bar has been raised yet again with the Speed 3.

A top priority was to not lose any of the Speed 2′s light wind performance whilst improving significantly in terms of agility, depower and speed. Armin Harich, Flysurfers top man is convinced this has been achieved.

The Speed 3 turns more tightly and faster even in the lightest winds. Thanks to the “Triple Depower Technology“, contact to the kite is always present even when fully depowered. Numerous optimizations to the profile have resulted in a more effective and direct depower effect. The already large wind range has expanded again.

Flysurfer Speed 3The legendary hang-time has just gotten even sweeter with more jump height, and thanks to the increased agility, kiteloops now belong to the Speed 3’s repertoire. Whether old-school, big-air, racing or lightwind cruising – the Speed 3 sets new standards and redefines performance.

Naturally, stability also had to be considerably enhanced in order to make the gains in agility and depower controllable – no easy task. The Flysurfer developers have successfully integrated this into the design of the Speed 3.

The flag-out function of the kite also demanded a complete redesign to cover the increased wind range. The tapered front edge allows for exceptional flagging out safety with only 4 lines ensuring good relaunch.

Pricing is very similar to that of the Speed 2. The Deluxe models are exactly the same. The introduction of the Infinity bar to the standard models have caused a small price increase.

Size Standard Deluxe
12m £1390 £1650
15m £1520 £1825
19m £1650 £2000

Flysurfer Psycho 4

Flysurfer Psycho 4 sequence shot of Lennart

The Psycho 4 is the freestyle kite from the Flysurfer range. As the name suggests it is the fourth in a line of kites known for their freestyle ability. They are famous for their power and boosting ability. In recent years, the real developments have been in the turning speed and safety systems. The Flysurfer Psycho 4 is now a great kite which boasts fast flying speed through the air, a stable canopy structure, powerful loops, reliable and intuitive safety systems and great looks to top it all off.

Here is a summary of the Pyscho 4′s new features:

The total development of the PSYCHO4 took almost two years to complete and also brings a completely new innovation in kite design. The PSYCHO4 with its revolutionary “Triple Depower Technology” combines 3 characteristics to maximize the depower effect:

  • The angle of attack changes
  • The projected size of the kite changes
  • The airfoil camber changes

Flysurfer Psycho 4 - depower

The PSYCHO4 impresses by combining these 3 characteristics, resulting in an extremely wide “sweet-spot” where the kite creates its optimum performance. A tube kite, by comparison, only uses the change in angle of attack in order to achieve it’s depower effect.

The range of use has significantly increased from its predecessor. It is worth mentioning that through the “Triple Depower Technology” it was possible to keep the kite’s turning direct and fast when depowered. Another key design point and the next milestone in the PSYCHO4 design is the turning speed and radius.

The PSYCHO4 is by far the narrowest and fastest turning kite that we have built to date! This kite is predestined for radical Free and Wakestyle. The PSYCHO4 can master any kind of kiteloop with ease. The rider sets the extremity and limits. Unhooked performance has also been improved, so load it up for extreme pop!

Psycho 4 flying

Our kites are designed to fulfill the “wish-list“ of our customers. Therefore, the PSYCHO4 has an extra dose of versatility. The option to individually adjust the steering forces is already well-known among Flysurfer users. New however, is the “Depower Performance Enhancer” which makes it possible to alter the characteristics of the way the PSYCHO4 depowers to your own preference. The Depower profile can be changed directly by opening and/or closing the middle air intake valve (in 3 settings).

  • Open Valve: The profile is clean and accelerates more by depowering. The forward pull remains a bit higher. This setting is especially recommended for maximum performance and light wind conditions.
  • Closed Valve: The depower effect feels more direct, because the depowered profile is more concave at the leading edge and loses power instantly. The acceleration of the kite is reduced for the benefit of a more direct and increased depower. This setting is especially recommended for learning new tricks and for kiting in waves.

Target Audience

The PSYCHO4 is very easy to control, thanks to its enormous depower and very agile flight characteristics. This is a kite that wants to be worked. If you’re looking for a kite for cruising or old school riding, better stick to our SPEED2. The PSYCHO4 impresses with radical lift and big airs when steering the kite back for a jump. The high flying and turning speed demands a sensitive hand to position the kite when landing. The PSYCHO4 is a kite for experienced riders who feel at home in the land of Free- and Wakestyle (or want to).
psycho 4 banner
For this reason, the PSYCHO4 is only available up to 15m². The SPEED2 is unbeatable in the light wind segment and in reverse, in super high-wind conditions, we recommend the PULSE2 6m to intermediate riders, which is a bit more comfortable and stable in these conditions.

In order to get the best out of the PSYCHO4, it comes standard with the completely new Infinity Bar to offer you the safest and best possible control bar out there.

Other Features

The PSYCHO4 naturally comes with our 6 months Free-Repair Guarantee, as you would expect from FLYSURFER. With regards to durability, the PSYCHO4 also outperforms its predecessor.

Other features at a glance:

  • Shortened, colored and covered bridle lines for even easier handling and almost no tangles
  • No more pulleys at the kite = less abrasion/wear
  • Trimming the kite has become super simple thanks to the new shorter mixer-setup
  • Incorporated 5 th line safety system / FDS
